Passport

Please be informed that in order to submit a request for the issuance of new biometric passport at the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Zurich, it is necessary to make an appointment in advance.

Appointments are made online on the website of the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Zurich: http://www.zurich.mfa.gov.rs/lat/index.php  

During the stay abroad, the passport serves its holder as proof of identity and as proof of citizenship of the Republic of Serbia. The passport may only be used by the person in whose name it was issued. Please keep your passport during your stay abroad.

In case of loss or damage, contact the nearest diplomatic and consular representation of the Republic of Serbia.

The advice is to make a copy of your biometric passport before going abroad, so that in case of loss, you will have the necessary data to obtain a new passport, report the loss of your passport to the police or obtain a travel document.

Biometric passports of the Republic of Serbia are issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In order to submit a request for the issuance of a biometric passport, personal presence is required, as well as the presence of a parent for a minor child.

The following original documents are required:
1. Identification document: previous biometric passport, blue passport or identity card;
2. Swiss residence permit (if it is being extended, then a confirmation from the competent Swiss authority that the extension procedure is in progress). Dual citizens can present their ID card or Swiss passport.

A minor, regardless of age, gets his own passport and cannot be registered in his parents' passport. For minors, in addition to the above-mentioned documents, the presence of both parents or the certified consent of a parent who is not present is necessary. The above also applies in the case when the other parent is a foreign citizen.

If an application for a passport is submitted for a child of divorced parents, where only one of the parents who is the guardian of the child is present, it is necessary to attach a divorce decree in which it is clearly stated that the applicant for the passport is the guardian of the child. It is also necessary that this part of the text in the court decision be translated into Serbian by an authorized court interpreter.

The legal deadline for resolving requests is 60 days, which is prescribed by Article 34, paragraph 2 of the Law on Travel Documents.

The request for issuing a passport can be submitted no earlier than seven months before the expiration date of the already issued passport.

When collecting the biometric travel document, the personal presence of the person whose name is on the passport is necessary. It is necessary to bring the confirmation of the submitted request and the old passport.
Minors who did not provide fingerprints do not have to be present when collecting the biometric travel document. The minor who gave the fingerprints must be present when collecting the biometric travel document. The presence of at least one parent who was present at the time of submitting the application and signed the application is mandatory.
Please keep the confirmation of the submitted request, because it contains a number under which you will be able to find information on the website of the Consulate as to whether your travel document is ready for collection.
Note: Citizens of the Republic of Serbia who were born on the territory of the former SFRY republics, and who in the previous period did not initiate the procedure for registration in the birth registers of the Republic of Serbia, to immediately initiate appropriate administrative procedures and regulate the obligation to register in the birth registers of the Republic of Serbia, because they will not be able to obtain new travel documents if they do not have birth certificates from the Republic of Serbia.

Diplomatic-consular missions are unable to receive biometric passport applications for:
• Newborn children abroad until the birth is registered, that is, they are registered in the register of births in Serbia, the place of residence is registered and the JMBG (unique citizen's registration number) is determined;
• Persons who conclude a marriage before a foreign authority and apply for a passport to change their surname, as long as the change of surname is not recorded in the registers in Serbia.

The validity of blue passports marked "FR Yugoslavia" ended on December 31, 2011.

Loss of travel document
If you have lost your travel document, report its loss to the police in the country where the loss occurred and request a confirmation of the loss report. With this confirmation, contact the nearest diplomatic and consular representation of the Republic of Serbia, which, after the identity and citizenship determination procedure has been carried out, will issue you a travel document for returning to the Republic of Serbia.

Travel Document

A travel document is issued by diplomatic and consular missions in the event of a lost passport and is used for returning to the Republic of Serbia.

The travel document allows for a single trip in one direction.

Upon returning to the Republic of Serbia, it is necessary to apply for a new passport.

Documentation required for issuing a travel document for adults:
1. A document proving citizenship of the Republic of Serbia – certificate of citizenship of the Republic of Serbia (original, not older than one year) or a biometric identity card of the Republic of Serbia.
2. A document proving identity – identity card of the Republic of Serbia.
3. Police confirmation that the loss of the passport has been reported.
4. A statement explaining the circumstances under which the passport was lost (obtainable at the Consulate).
5. A completed application form for issuing a travel document (available at the Consulate).
6. Two color photos (3.5 x 4.5 cm).
Additional requirements for minors:
When applying for a travel document for a minor, the presence of both parents with travel documents or identity cards from the Republic of Serbia is mandatory. If one of the parents is a foreign national, it is necessary to bring the identity card or passport of the country of which they are a citizen.
